Peter Carey

Peter Philip Carey (født 7. mai 1943 i Bacchus Marsh, Victoria) er en australsk forfatter, bosatt i New York. Han har to ganger vunnet Bookerprisen: i 1988 for Oscar and Lucinda og i 2001 for True History of the Kelly Gang.[1]
Han studert biologi og kjemi på Monash University, Melbourne, og arbeidet i reklamebransjen fra 1962 til 1967, og igjen fra 1970 til 1990 - kombinert med forfatterskapet. I 1990 flyttet han til New York.
Debutromanen Bliss skildrer livet i reklamebransjen, mens Illywhacker, Oscar and Lucinda og True History of the Kelly Gang alle er skildringer av Australias historie.[2] The Kelly Gang handler om den lovløse Ned Kelly. Carey har nølende beskrevet den røde tråden i forfatterskapet som «the invention of my country».[3] Han har blitt beskrevet som en avantgardist og formfornyer.[4]
Carey har vært medvirkende til filmmanus på Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World og Bliss. Filmen Oscar og Lucinda (1997) er basert på hans roman. Han ble offiser av Order of Australia i 1912.[5]
