Alexander McCall Smith (født 24. august 1948 i Zimbabwe) er en britisk forfatter og professor emeritus i medisinsk juss ved University of Edinburgh i Edinburgh.

McCall Smith vokste opp i Zimbabwe. Han flyttet først til Skottland for å studere, deretter til Botswana hvor han underviste i juss ved University of Botswana før han igjen flyttet til Skottland.

Han er tidligere leder av British Medical Journals etikkomité, viseformann av britiske Human Genetics Commission, medlem av UNESCOs International Bioethics Commission og medlem av Royal Society of Edinburgh.

I tillegg til faglitteratur har McCall Smith siden 1980-tallet vært en produktiv forfatter av barnebøker, kriminallitteratur og humor. Hans gjennombrudd som forfatter kom imidlertid først med serien om The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency som begynte med romanen av samme navn i 1998.

I 2007 ble Alexander McCall Smith utnevnt til Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

På fritiden er McCall Smith amatørmusiker. Han spiller fagott i The Really Terrible Orchestra.
