Vindavkjølingseffekt

Vindavkjølingseffekt er effekten av lufttemperatur og vindhastighet som i kombinasjon gjør at temperaturen oppfattes lavere enn den i realiteten er.

Forklaring[rediger | rediger kilde]

Ifølge de termodynamiske lover vil ethvert legeme som har høyere temperatur enn luften rundt avgi varme til den omkringliggende luften. Jo høyere temperaturforskjell på objektet og luften, jo raskere energioverføring blir det. Men siden luft er en dårlig varmeleder vil overhøringshastigheten gå ned med en gang luften blir varmet opp av legemet. Når vinden blåser vil den oppvarmede luften bli ført bort og varmetapet vil øke. Dette er vindavkjølingseffekten.

Andre faktorer som er med på å avgjøre varmetapet hos dyr og mennesker er lufttrykk, relativ fuktighet og perspirasjon, men dette har ingen ting med vindavkjøling å gjøre.

Kontroversielle definisjoner[rediger | rediger kilde]

Den offisielle definisjonen av vindavkjøling i meteorologien var opprinnelig basert på målinger gjort et lite stykke over jordoverflaten. Den nøyaktige definisjonen har vært kontroversiell fordi det er en sammensatt indeks, fordi levende og ikke-levende objekter oppfører seg forskjellig og fordi vindavkjølingsrapporter har en stor innvirkning på vinterturisme.

Den første vindavkjølingsformelen ble utviklet av Forsvaret i USA under 2. verdenskrig av forskere som var stasjonert i Antarktis. På 1970-tallet ble den så offentliggjort av National Weather Service. Formelen ble revidert i 2001 for å kunne inkludere mer nøyaktige teorier og tester enn de som ble gjort av det militære. Disse formlene er laget spesielt for menneskekroppen, eller mer spesifikt, for ansiktet. Vindavkjølingseffekten virker også på dyr og ikke-levende objekter, men det er andre formler for disse.

Modellene[rediger | rediger kilde]

Det har generelt sett vært enighet om at den originale modellen for vindavkjøling ikke nødvendigvis var den beste for alle formål. Den fysiske basisen for beregningen av vindakjøling er nå forholdet mellom temperatur, volum og trykk i en væske. Luft i bevegelse minsker lufttrykket og øker avkjølingen. Stillestående luft kan faktisk isolere, og det var derfor vindavkjølingen ble målt flere meter over bakken.

Den amerikansk-kanadiske modellen passer best for ekstremt kalde forhold. Andre formler har blitt utviklet for tempererte forhold, men er ikke like velkjente. Noen vindavkjølingsformler tar også fuktighet med i beregningene.

På slutten av 70-tallet og begynnelsen av 80-tallet brukte kanadierne et system som oppga vindavkjølingen i W/m², watt pr kvadratmeter, men publikum syntes det var forvirrende og media gikk tilbake til den gamle rapporteringsmetoden igjen. I det kanadiske systemet ville for eksempel 1750 W/m² tilsvare en temperatur på −32 °C.

I 2001 implementerte National Weather Service den nye vindavkjølingsindeksen, som bruker en modell som viser hudens temperatur under varierende vindhastigheter og temperaturer. Resultatene av denne modellen beregnes, med en grads feilmargin, med denne formelen:

der $T_{wc}\,\!$ er vindavkjølingsindeksen basert på Celsiusskalaen, $T_{a}\,\!$ er lufttemperaturen i °C, og $V\,\!$ er vindhastigheten i km/t målt ved 10 meters høyde.

Tilsvarende formel med standard amerikanske måleenheter er:

der $T_{wc}\,\!$ og $T_{a}\,\!$ er mål i °F, og $V\,\!$ i miles per time.

Når lufttemperaturen synker vil den avkjølende effekten til eventuell vind øke, for eksempel vil en vindhastighet på 16 km/t senke temperaturen med større margin ved en lufttemperatur på −20°C enn ved −10°C. Sterkere vind enn 65 km/t antas å øke vindavkjølingseffekten minimalt utover effekten som føles ved den hastigheten, og vindavkjølingseffekten regnes for å være fraværende ved temperaturer over ca. 20°C.
