Sommer-OL 1988 ble arrangert i Seoul i Sør-Korea i perioden 17. september til 2. oktober 1988. Dette var første gang Sør-Korea arrangerte olympiske leker.

Hodori var den offisielle olympiske maskoten, mens «Hand in Hand» var OL-låta. Til lekene ble det bygd en egen olympiapark i Seoul. 159 nasjoner var representert av 8 391 deltakere, 6 197 menn og 2 194 kvinner. De deltok i tilsammen 237 øvelser. 27 221 frivillige hjalp til, mens det hele ble formidlet av 11 331 akkrediterte mediaansatte (4 978 skrivende og 6 353 innenfor kringkasting).

Dette var siste gang de store medaljenasjonene Øst-Tyskland og Sovjetunionen deltok i Sommer-OL, før Tysklands gjenforening i 1990 og oppløsningen av Sovjetunionen i 1991. Lekene unngikk de store boikottene som de tidligere to lekene hadde blitt utsatt for. Nord-Korea, som teknisk sett fremdeles var i krig med Sør-Korea, oppfordret til boikott og fikk følge av noen få av sine allierte; Albania, Cuba, Madagaskar og Seychellene. Av ulike årsaker deltok verken Etiopia eller Nicaragua.

Sovjetunionen ble mestvinnende nasjon med 55 gullmedaljer og 132 medaljer totalt. De norske utøverne Tor Heiestad og Jon Rønningen vant én gullmedalje hver.

Valg av vertsby

Seoul ble valgt ved avstemning under den internasjonale olympiske komités 84. sesjon i Baden-Baden i Vest-Tyskland 30. september 1981.[2][3]
