Den gjeldende versjonen heter &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;84&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. &lt;br /&gt;

Koordinatene i WGS angis som regel i [[grad (vinkel)|grader]] (f.eks. [[desimalgrader]]) for [[lengdegrad|lengde]] (øst i Norge) og [[Breddegrad|bredde]] (nord i Norge). [[Origo]] for koordinatene er jordens [[massesentrum]], og [[lengdegrad|referansemeridianen]] er IERS-meridianen som ligger 5,31 buesekunder (0,0885 bueminutter; 0,001475 buegrader) øst for [[nullmeridianen]], altså 102,5 meter på [[Greenwich-observatoriet|Greenwich&amp;#039;]] breddegrad.&lt;br /&gt;

Datumet er en [[rotasjonsellipsoide|omdreiningsellipsoide]] (oblat [[rotasjonsellipsoide|sfæroide]]) med [[store halvakse]] = {{nowrap|6 378 137 m}} ([[ekvator]]radius) og [[flattrykning]] = {{brøk|298,257223563}}. Dette medfører at lille halvakse = {{nowrap|6 356 752,3142 m}} ([[Geografisk pol|pol]]avstand) (altså 21384,6858 m kortere). WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;84 brukte opprinnelig GRS80-ellipsoiden, den samme som fortsatt brukes i det europeiske datumet [[EUREF89]], men i WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;84 er det nå gjort en liten justering. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;84 brukte først geoiden EGM84, men i 1996 skiftet man til geoiden EGM96, som sist ble justert i 2004. Høydeforskjellen mellom EGM96-geoiden og WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;84-ellipsoiden varierer mellom −105&amp;amp;nbsp;m og +85&amp;amp;nbsp;m.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
[[Den kalde krigen]], utviklingen innen [[romfart]] og andre årsaker gjorde at man i 1950-årene ble klar over behovet for et globalt geodetisk system. [[Forsvarsdepartementet (USA)|USAs forsvarsdepartement]] startet derfor utviklingen av WGS. Systemet er publisert i flere utgaver: WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;60, WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;66 og WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;72.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
WGS&amp;amp;nbsp;84 kom i 1984, og flere mindre revisjoner er publisert fram til 2004. WGS ble utgitt av NIMA (National Imagery and Mapping Agency), som nå heter [[National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency]] og ligger under USAs forsvarsdepartement.&lt;br /&gt;
