==Søkerland==

Grunnet FIFAs rotasjonspolitikk kunne ikke land fra Sør-Amerika ([[VM i fotball 2014|VM 2014]]) eller Europa ([[VM i fotball 2018|VM 2018]]) søke. Søkerne ble dermed: [[Australia]], [[Japan]], [[Qatar]], [[Sør-Korea]] og [[USA]]. Qatar ble tildelt mesterskapet 2. desember 2010.

Avgjørelsen om å tildele mesterskapet til Qatar ble svært omdiskutert. ==Konsept==
Med sine 840&nbsp;000 innbyggere (dog høyere hvis man inkluderer fremmedarbeidere, her er 1,3 og 1,6 millioner nevnt) og flateinnhold på bare 11&nbsp;437 kvadratkilometer (15 % større enn [[Kautokeino]] kommune) er Qatar den minste vertsnasjonen i VM-historien. De har heller aldri kvalifisert seg for et VM, men dette hadde heller ikke Japan da de i 1996 ble tildelt rollen som delvert for mesterskapet i 2002. Qatar har god økonomi slik at landet i stor grad kunne kjøpe seg ut av flere av innvendingene som var kommet mot søknaden.

19,3 milliarder 2010-kroner var planlagt brukt til å bygge tolv arenaer som er tegnet med unike visuelle identiteter, inspirert av Qatars kultur. De øvrige kostnadene var beregnet til drøye 4 milliarder. Varmen (gjennomsnittstemperaturen i juni og juli ligger på 41 grader) skulle løses ved at klimaanlegg skulle holde temperaturen på 27 grader inne på stadion for både spillere og tilskuere, siden de mener spillerne yter best ved denne temperaturen. Størstedelen av strømmen til driften kom fra solceller, som etablerer airconditioning. I ni av de tolv arenaene som blir bygget vil den øverste seksjonen fjernes etter VM, for så å bli  transportert til utviklingsland. Det skulle ifølge søknaden gi 22 nye fotballarenaer i forskjellige U-land rundt om i verden.

I tillegg er det blitt beregnet av den amerikanske storbanken Merrill Lynch at forberedelsene totalt vil koste 65 milliarder dollar (tilsvarende 402 milliarder kroner), siden det må bygges massiv annen infrastruktur også, herunder: veier, jernbane, flyplass, havn og en 40 kilometer lang bro som skal binde Qatar sammen med nabolandet Bahrain, samt en helt ny by kalt Lusail.<ref>[http://e24.no/naeringsliv/article3953525.ece E24.no] – ''QATAR: Prislapp for VM: 390 mrd'' (17.12.2010)</ref>

Den tyske arkitekten [[Albert Speer (1934–2017)|Albert Speer]] laget den overordnete planen for de helt nye anleggene for VM i fotball 2022 i [[Qatar]] og denne planen lå til grunn da Qatar søkte om å arrangere verdensmesterskapet.
