Dette var første gang det nye trofeet, ''FIFA World Cup'', ble utdelt. Det forrige trofeet, [[Jules Rimet-pokalen]], ble vunnet til odel og eie av {{F|Brasil}} i [[VM i fotball 1970|1970]], etter at Brasil var blitt verdensmester for tredje gang.

Turneringsformatet ble endret fra sist VM i 1970: De 16 kvalifiserte lagene ble inndelt i fire grupper à 4 lag. De to beste lagene i hver gruppe avanserte til andre runde, der de ble inndelt i to grupper à fire lag. Vinnerne av hver gruppe spilte mot hverandre i finalen, mens gruppetoerne spilte om bronsemedaljene.

I første runde ble det spilt et politisk ladet oppgjør mellom de to tyske statene i [[Hamburg]]. [[DDRs herrelandslag i fotball|Øst-Tyskland]] vant 1-0, men de ble utslått i annen runde. Vest-Tyskland ble anført av [[Franz Beckenbauer]] og [[Gerd Müller]], som scoret vinnermålet i finalen. Selv om Nederland kom på andreplass, var det den nederlandske stjernen [[Johan Cruijff]] og lagets [[totalfotball]] som fikk mest oppmerksomhet.

{{F|Polen}}s [[Grzegorz Lato]] ble mesterskapets toppscorer med sju mål.
