Navnet Malpaso er hentet fra en bekk sør for [[Carmel-by-the-Sea, California|Carmel]] i [[California]], hvor Eastwood har oppholdt seg det meste av sitt liv. Navnet «Malpaso» er spansk for «feilsteg». Da Eastwood takket ja til rollen i [[Man with No Name]], fortalte hans agent ham at det var et «feilsteg» for hans karrière.
