Det er bevis på bosetting i [[jernalderen]], men byens historie som en by begynte med grunnleggelsen av klosteret [[Arbroath Abbey]] i [[1178]]. Byen vokste mye under [[den industrielle revolusjonen]] gjennom [[lin]]- og deretter [[jute]]industrien og ingeniørsektoren.
