== Kriterier ==
AFI lanserte en liste på tre kriterier som velgerne måtte ta hensyn til når de skulle stemme:<ref name="afi"/>
* Sitatet må være en uttalelse, en snar replikk eller kort dialog fra en amerikansk film. Sangtekster gjelder ikke.
* Sitatet må ha blitt en del av dagligtalen, hjulpet av referanser i populærkulturen.
* Sitatet skal minne tilskueren om opphavsfilmen, og dermed sørge for at filmen holder seg aktuell.
Kun spillefilmer som var utgitt før 1. januar 2004 ble vurdert.<ref name="afi"/>
