==Symptomer og tegn==
Alvorlighetsgraden av alkoholabstinens kan variere fra milde symptomer som lette søvnforstyrrelser og mild angst til svært alvorlig og livstruende symptomer. ===Langvarig abstinens===
En langvarig alkoholabstinens forekommer hos mange alkoholikere der abstinenssymptomer fortsetter utover det akutte abstinensstadiet, men symptomene er vanligvis på et subakutt intensitetsnivå og gradvis avtagende over tid. Dette syndromet er også noen ganger kalt postakutt abstinenssyndrom. Noen abstinenssymptomer kan vedvare i minst ett år etter seponering av alkohol. Søvnløshet er også funnet å påvirke tilbakefallsrate. Studier har funnet at [[magnesium]] eller [[trazodon]] kan være nyttig i behandling av søvnløshet ved langvarig alkoholabstinens.  Søvnløshet kan være vanskelig å behandle hos alkoholikere fordi mange av de tradisjonelle sovemidlene (for eksempel benzodiazepiner og barbiturater) virker via en GABA<sub>En</sub>reseptormekanisme og er krysstolerant med alkohol.
